Last weekend we celebrated Cassie and Callie’s birthday. Their birth day, the day they were actually born was such a day of trauma I try to think less about that day and more about how far they have come. Here is a blog post about the survival rates of preemies. Our girls were born at 26 weeks and weighed 2lbs2oz and 1lb13oz.
At our last RESOLVE support group meeting, one of the couples is trying to decide if they should transfer 1 or 2 embryos for their next IVF attempt. This is such a difficult decision. You would think if you transfer 2 you would double your chances of getting pregnant, but the math doesn’t work that way. If you do transfer two and both work you are in an at-risk preganncy increasing your chances of pregnancy compications and preterm birth. So the choice is a difficult one.
We have been blessed by a miraculous outcome with our 26-week twins but we have also been dealt the other side of these statistics losing two baby boys at 21-weeks and 24-weeks. In many things we can only make the best decision we can at the time with the information we have. Much of the outcomes are out of our hands.
