Welcome to the world of Girl’s Kindergarten Soccer. Our team name, after much debate and a simple vote, is the Unicorns (I know fierce). But the team we played tonight were the Popsicles so maybe it’s not about making the other team afraid of their opponent. Since we don’t keep score and we don’t want to hurt anyones feelings I’m not sure we’re even supposed to be cheering, like the good-ole days of “Go Unicorns…Beat the Popsicles!” Somehow a cheer of “Go Unicorns and Popsicles! Just Do Your Best and Have Fun!” doesn’t have the same ring.
At our game tonight we tied…again (well sort of…we don’t keep score so every game is a tie, but the girls keep track anyway so I don’t see what the point is.)
I played competitive sports growing up so maybe that supressed competitiveness is just coming out. I have very little to compete about now (although the other afternoon I was in-and-out of Costco in 25 minutes…just saying.) So if you can’t live vicariously through your kids to boost your ego what are you supposed to do?
The girls really do enjoy playing (vs. last fall when there was more sight-seeing going on) and they are into the game so that is fun to see. I should just enjoy these Unicorn vs. Popsicle days because soon enough they will come home crying because the Popsicles beat their pants off and the real life lessons will begin.
So for the teams that have yet to play the Unnicorns, be prepared to meet a group of girls that are fierce, determined, and nice and sweet and “Oh my gosh, I love your soccer shoes…those are so cute! Wanna go on the swings with me!”
